Client: Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) (2005-2006)
ICORA FM is located in Eshowe about an
hour's drive North of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal. The station began broadcasting
with a four-year community sound broadcasting license in December 2002. In
2005, ICORA FM approached the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) to
support their operations.
The MDDA approached Blue Cow to conduct a technical
assessment of the station and identify the priorities for technical support.
Martin Sims of Blue Cow was duly sent to Eshowe and spent several days at the
station finding out what ICORA really needed. The findings of these days were
written up in a thorough technical assessment for the MDDA.
The key finding of
the assessment was that ICORA's facilities were in urgent need of service and
repairs. The MDDA did not hesitate to send Blue Cow back to Eshowe this time
armed with crates of tools and spare parts.
During a whirlwind 8-day stay, our
technical team moved and rewired the production studio, installed a final
control rack, serviced the on-air studio, attended to 22 repairs and returned
the station's audio computers to working condition. Following the service
Martin Sims spent a further five days at the station developing operator and
maintenance skills amongst the staff. This training programme also introduced
the station to digital editing for the first time and the station was
introduced to Audacity.
