Origins and History
Martin Sims started Blue Cow Productions in 1995. The name was his production moniker for radio programmes he was producing for campus radio.
Martin is the director of the company and the driving force behind its operations. He is an electronic engineering graduate. While studying he was enthralled by radio and after graduating, took on the challenge of managing MFM 92.6 in Stellenbosch. After some success as South Africa's first full-time campus radio station manager, Martin launched Blue Cow as a broadcast consultancy in 1999. Between 1999 and 2001, Martin completed a range of projects in the community radio field. Particularly notable was the Community Radio Technical Manual written for the Open Society Foundation for South Africa.
Blue Cow was cocooned between 2001 and 2003 while Martin was in full-time employment. These two years were an excellent experience spent working across the continent and refining knowledge of broadcast equipment and ICT systems for media.
In 2003, Martin returned his full-time attention to Blue Cow and immediately combined his technical and media management skills in the very exciting Spectrum broadcast. Spectrum was a 30-day special events broadcast tied to the Red Bull Music Academy. Martin built, staffed and programmed the studio in a matter of weeks, and the broadcast was met with great acclaim.
From 2004, Blue Cow expanded its activities and core team. Martin began assembling a team of highly skilled independent engineers, designers and trainers to support the larger projects that the company was taking on.
2005 saw Blue Cow take on its first complete studio installation, with the radical re-modelling of MFM 92.6. A brilliant achievement marking the first ten years of the company's existence, by bringing all of our skills to bare on re-inventing the station where it all started.
Riding the wave of convergence our fields of expertise continues to grow as we help radio stations transition to the Web and print journalists develop streaming media and all the possibilities in between.
